If you are Christ’s, what is your purpose?

April 6th, 2010 by DannyNelson

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, answers this question in his letter to the faithful saints who are in Ephesus. Speaking to the faithful saints, he says, “… we are [God's] workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10 ESV)

It’s very important that we distinguish why we are doing these good works. We are neither earning salvation nor meriting grace. Rather, we are living out our new natures. We are walking on the strainght and narrow path that is now mapped out for us by the Holy Spirit. Since we are God’s children, now alive in Him, we are to bring Him glory by doing His good works and giving Him the glory for them.

Knowing this, let’s be on the lookout for opportunities to do God’s good works that point His lost sheep to Him.

Best. Decade. Ever. Happy 10th Anniversary Manda!

November 3rd, 2009 by DannyNelson

No, we have not been married ten years. In fact, we are celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary next month on December 11th. Today is special because ten years ago today I asked Amanda, in the most awkward manner possible, if she would be my girlfriend. You can ask her for the awkward details if you like – she loves recounting the tale. Amanda graciously agreed to my request, and here we are ten years later in our fifth year of marriage with an awesome one-year-old son and a daughter on the way.

Praise God for His faithfulness in our relationship! I am so thankful to God for pairing me with Amanda Faith Tollison Nelson.

Properties of Gas Applied to Human Behavior

July 31st, 2009 by DannyNelson

If you have studied much chemistry you know that solids, liquids, and gases have distinct properties with very few exceptions. One property of gas is that will always expand to fill its container.  In other words, it takes up all of the room available to it. It is this distinct characteristic of gas that makes humans more like gas than either of the other two states of matter (I know, the other three if you include plasma).

For example, have you ever noticed that every one’s house has stuff in every room? The stuff can be anything. It can be useful like a desk, couch, or bed. It can also be useless like an exercise bike that nobody has used in three years or a bookshelf full of books that will never be read.

I have also noticed during my experience as a tax accountant that it doesn’t matter how much money you make. You will spend it all one way or another. In fact, almost everybody spends more than they have. I’ve seen clients that make twenty times as much as I do that have just as much cash at the end of the year as they did at the beginning. I think to myself, “Surely I would be more prudent if I had that much money.” But would I? Or am I so much like gas that I would still spend it all as quickly as I do now?

Do you live your life gaseously?

Should I beat my children? The Bible is telling me to.

July 2nd, 2009 by DannyNelson

Question posted on Yahoo! AnswersShould I beat my children? The Bible is telling me to. Proverbs 23:13 – 14: “Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death.” In other words, if you don’t beat your children, they’ll die and go to hell.
